Just saw a new commercial for a well-known piece of exercise equipment. Cracked up when I saw the boiler-plate fine-print line common to almost every weight loss product on TV--"When used in combination with any sensible diet and exercise program"--because for this particular product, the phrase had been modified to read: "When used in combination with any sensible diet and aerobic exercise program."
Why is this such a hoot? Because when this product first came out, it was advertised as a great way to get an aerobic workout! You could even order it with a nifty little heart monitor included! I had a friend who actually bought one of these and I tried it out. I remember being surprised that it actually didn't raise my heartbeat or get me breathing faster. (An increase in heartbeat rate and faster breathing are the hallmarks of aerobic exercise, no?)
There's so much junk being advertised on TV to help people lose weight. And so much of it has some version of that disclaimer--"When used in combination with exercise and diet."--in the on-screen small, small print. Here's a possibly-money saving idea...why not try the exercise and dieting first? Eat healthy foods, eat less, do some walking, carry your groceries to your car yourself, mow your own yard instead of using a lawn service....and forget about all that expensive weight-loss stuff hyped on TV!
